Petitions were signed to ban the controversial book, “a contemptible piece of pornography”, and Ellis was dropped by his then publishers Simon & Schuster because of “aesthetic differences”. Upon its release, it was widely condemned as being too graphically violent, outright misogynistic and got him labelled as a sadist.
